The beginning of what is now called Mic Club began in the summer of 2001 as an event called The Ave. The idea was to match burgeoning ATL hip hop MCs with an underground hip hop DJ named Ox and a funky live hip-hop band named BFD in an "MC battle" format. The Ave was an experiment. Sure there were other MC battles and even a couple of live band formatted predecessors but The Ave was grown from roots that were pure and ornery. There was nothing glamorous to The Ave. Those early MCs came to practice, learn, and develop their craft. No one looked into the thinly populated crowd for an A & R rep or high dollar producer. The early days were rough and honest.
After the days of incubation the event developed with the addition of the talented and loquacious host/beat box champion Dres tha Beatnik. The name was then changed to Mic Club and the word spread.
MCs step into the Apache Café on Tuesday nights and find an unmistakable energy and fervor for real and still honest freestyle. Dres makes a call through the crowd for two MCs to step up. There is no list to sign at Mic Club. Tuesdays are designed to inspire MCs to a higher level. No reciting home written rhymes, Mic Club is about focus and opening the ears to ride the live band pocket. Those that dare to "spit a written" are promptly removed from the stage at the will of the audience. At Mic Club the audience is the judge. If they think you are spittin' a written then they will let you know. Only the hottest most ferocious or crafty MCs will move on to the next round.
Now that is not to say that the audience is completely unforgiving. If an MC is new or nervous he /she may be allowed a stumble or two if they show some promise, but if an MC is "fakin the funk" then fuhgetaboutit. MCs that have something to offer and are hungry for growth will return and give themselves to the Mic Club…to practice, learn and develop their craft…to complete the cycle.
In addition to the live freestyle MC battles, Mic Club has hosted many legendary hip hop performances: KRS-One, Jungle Brothers, Craig G, Black Sheep, Little Brother, Masta Ace, C Rayz Walz, Camp Lo, Jedi Mind Tricks, Breez Evaflowin, Acrobatik, Q Tip, Minamina Goodsong, Psyche Oragami, Hieroglyphics, Earatik Statik, Binkis Recs, Broady Champs, and DJ Klever amongst others. Mic Club serves as a vehicle for talented newcomers to perform during the feature set and has been featured in many documentaries, most notably QD3's BEEF (9/03) narrated by Ving Rahmes.
The first Tuesday of the month Mic Club hosts the Beat Down. This monthly invites producers to go head-to-head in a best two-out-of-three track round. The audience picks the winner of each round. The winner of the championship round takes the pot. There is a maximum eight slots for the Beat Down. Sign up is at 8:30pm and there is a $25 registration fee. The Beat Down evidences some of the cutting edge music coming out of bedroom studios from ATL underground music producers.
