Every Wednesday many of Atlanta's finest contemporary jazz/r-n-b vocalists and musicians gather to relax, release and jam. Behind a house band (bass, drums, keys, guitar) headed by leader and keyboardist Al Smith, vocalists have an opportunity to perform covers and originals to an enthusiastically attentive crowd.
Wednesday's jam session attracts all kinds of artists. Beginner vocalists and musicians looking to gain experience, local bands interested in dress rehearsing a new tune, and pros that just want to kick back and do what they love; all are embraced and are welcome at the Midtown Atlanta Jam Session. This is not a talent showcase or competition this is an evening of great vibes, food, drink, old and new friends.
It is not unusual to find producers, filmmakers, musical directors and the like hanging out, enjoying themselves while also keeping an eye out to connect with talented artists. Nearly every Wednesday there is at least one discovery made. A fresh face nobody has heard before gets on the mic or drum set or trumpet and lights up the whole room. These nights are what the Midtown Atlanta Jam Session is all about.
Wednesday's jam session is for vocalists and musicians. Spoken word, poetry, rap, hip-hop, and track acts should visit the Sunday night's Free Forum Exchange open mic. Vocalists can sit in with the band by signing up on the list made available at 10pm while instrumentalists need simply to approach the stage and ask to sit in. Funny man/instigator/graphic designer Corey Whitehead hosts. The café doors open at 8pm for dinner. The music starts at 10pm and ends at 2am. The admission is $6. Tables fill up quickly.
