I love exclusivity. I’m not sure what it is but there’s a certain satisfaction that comes with having that pair of limited edition shoes that I know only 500 people in the whole world will have. I’m not one to jump on bandwagons or buy those silly mukluks every chick in the city is wearing. Damn, those things are hideous.

My love of originality in style drew me to a recent launch party at Livestock in Gastown (239 Abbott Street). Adidas is bringing back a product that is the epitome of custom style. The adicolor shoe, originally launched back in 1983 as a result of the popular desire to express oneself through modified street wear, has made a comeback. Livestock has been known to carry limited edition shoes and rare collections, so adicolor makes a fitting addition to their inventory. In honor of the event, Livestock painted their walls black, my guess is to highlight the blankness of the shoe’s clean slate, ready for that personal touch.

Currently, Livestock carries the adicolor Hi which comes with a set of spray paints; the Century which comes with multicoloured laces; the Superstar II with several different coloured stripe inserts; and the Stan Smith with weatherproof markers. All of this is only the beginning, as adidas plans to launch more components of the series in the near future.

Even though I consider myself to have a steady hand, I imagined the pressure that I would be under while customizing a pair of the shoes and wondered if there would be room for error. Man, that sure would suck if I fucked up a brand new pair of shoes! I checked out the adicolor website and discovered that it provides plenty of instruction, guidance and inspiration to make the customization process less intimidating. And not to worry, fuck ups are fixable!

How rad would it be to be able to change the stripes on your adidas to match every outfit?! Or to candy paint your own pair of adicolor Hi’s?! Adding a pair of adicolors to any sneaker freak’s collection ups that exclusivity factor significantly. It seems as though the whole self-expression-through-street-style phase is coming back in full force. No doubt these adicolors will move fast.
