20 Questions with: John Morgan - Powerplant Music

1. When/Why did you become a DJ?

In 1997 after hanging around a bunch of friends who dj’d quite a bit. Although I did perform live PA for about 5 years previous to 1997, it was about then when I started playing records.

2. Who were/are your biggest influences?

Orbital, LFO, Spicelab in the early days.

3. What was the first gig you played and how did it go?

The first live PA gig I had was at Graceland in 1992 playing at a party organized by Bill Leeb (Delerium) called Co-ordinate 01.... it went well, and believe me, live PA in those days was all about din sync and 303’s.... no laptops back then!

4. Tell us about the craziest thing you have witnessed from the booth?

I’ve seen countless partiers grab or stop records while they were playing, unplug power, that sort of thing. The craziest thing I’ve seen happen is 10 girls simultaneously flashing me while I was trying to cue a record... not too crazy, but a bit distracting to say the least.

5. Where are you currently playing?

Focus at the Lotus on Friday nights with Kevin Shiu, Kristian Littmann and a selection of top international guests. Other parties here and there, and of course at my house as much as possible.

6. Thoughts on the current state of the Van electronic scene?

I think it’s quite healthy for a city of this size. There are more than a few producers doing very well these days on the international music scene, and there are more than a few very successful club nights all week that have been going for several years. At times I feel there are more club nights and promoters than partiers!

7. Do you produce your own music?

For sure - over the past 5 years - I’ve put out over 10 records on various international labels, and recently last year started up my own record label, Powerplant Music. Since Jan of last year we’ve put out 3 records, all produced and remixed with local talent such as Kevin Shiu, Shiloh, Jay Tripwire, and Rob Curtis. I’ve actually been producing electronic music since 1986 when it was all midi, din sync and 303.

8. What other DJs in Vancouver should we be checking out?

I have lots of favorite locals - Kevin Shiu, Kristian Littmann, Tom Thomas, Alison Barth, Andy Clockwork, Tyler Stadius, Kevin Muskay

9. The current most played record in your crate is?

Harry Peat - Affrodisiac - Asad Rizvi Remix - Alternative Route..... wore the grooves off that record and if I hear it anymore I’ll throw it a cross the room!

10. If you could play a gig anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Bali - from what I’ve heard from my friends its amazing to be there.

Focus Resident John Morgan gives us the answers...

11. What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?

Being tied to a chair and then forced to listen to country music while watching Brittany Spears and Kevin Federline eat spaghetti front of me.

12. Where would you like to live?

New York City

13. What is your idea of earthly happiness?

14. Who are your favorite characters in history?
That’s a tough question - I’d say Harrison Ford as Dekkard in Blade Runner... I guess if you’re talking real life I’d say Bob Moog maybe. Is that weird?

15. Who are your heroes in real life?

It depends on what you’re referring to - If it’s regarding House Music, I’d say Danny Tenaglia. It may sound kinda strange, but if you’ve danced through a 12 hour Tenaglia set you will know what I’m talking about.

16. Your favorite musician?

Devin Townsend is probably the most talented musician I’ve every played with. My favorite musician/band changes all the time - seems like every week I’ve heard my new best song ever.

17. What was your last dream about?

Having sex with my wife - it seemed so real and when I woke up and it was really happening!

18. What to your mind would be the greatest of misfortunes?

Losing my hearing.. kinda like ’It’s All Gone Pete Tong’... man would that suck.

19. What natural gift would you most like to possess?

It’d be really cool be a good singer - I really suck at singing.

20. What is your motto/philosophy on life?

Have a good time all the time - Viv Savage, keyboard player, Spinal Tap
