Interview with founder’s Mark Holland and Sergio Senatore - Oct 5 2006, Toronto, Hype1.com Head Office

Hype1: How did you two meet?

Sergio: I was a pretty crazy teenager growing up in Toronto and I would party a lot. I remember meeting Derek (Mark’s brother) at a rave years ago. That same night we met a couple of girls at this rave and decided to take them back to Derek’s house. When we got back to his house, Mark was there with his friends smoking some weed. Mark passed the joint to me, and the rest is history. Mark was just as young and crazy as me, and in just one year of knowing each other we packed our bags and moved to New York.

Hype1: How did Kleen Media begin?

Sergio: Mark and I were always involved in the bar business. When we moved to New York City we started off bussing tables, then as waiters, and bartenders also. About five years ago I began deejaying and became Dj. Kleen. I worked in small bars and restaurants in the big city and as my craft improved, Mark would promote the venues I spun at. Together we were able to bring out a good crowd, and a very attractive crowd as well. Eventually we landed a gig at The Hudson Hotel. I would deejay there, and Mark would promote. This place was and probably still is one of the hottest spots in New York, and we made it even hotter. It was at that point where we knew we had something good going on. We continued throwing parties at this hot spot and other trendy venues in the Manhattan area. Last year we both came back to Toronto because we had some real estate investments to take care of and began to do what we do best, "throw sick parties" and that’s how Kleen Media began.

Hype1: Tell me about the crowd that frequents your parties?

Sergio: Our crowd is HOT! But not only are they beautiful, they are mature. And when I say mature, I don’t mean old I mean that they are mature minded. When you come to a Kleen Media event or party, you will see a 20 year old girl bonding with a 40 year old dude, or vice versa.
Mark: Our crowd loves to party. They come to hear good music, get drunk and get laid.

Hype1: Why does Kleen media have such a large model clientele?

Sergio: Yes we do get a lot of models coming to our events and it’s probably because of our modeling background. A lot of our friends are models, stylists, hairdressers, make-up artists, photographers, and even fashion designers. When you know this amount of people that work in the fashion industry, they are bound to hook up and come to your party.
Mark: Our fashion clientele is quite worldly, and appreciates the level of maturity that you will find at a Kleen Media event.

Hype1: In such an over saturated market of promoters, in one year you two have done so much. How did you accomplish this and do you have any secrets you are willing to share?

Sergio: Definitely. The reason Kleen Media has grown and accomplished so much in one year is because we treat promoting like a serious business. Of course we go out at night and let loose and party with our clients, but you have to know where to draw the line. When we wake up in the morning we get on our computers, make phone calls, set-up meetings, set-up graphic design, etc. We dedicate a lot of time to our business, and this is why we succeed. There are 24 hours in one day and every hour is valuable.
Mark: I totally agree with Sergio, it’s all about programming and marketing, and a lot of hard work.

Hype1: Who do you look up to in the Toronto and International scene within the realm of nightlife promotions and event planning?

Sergio: I definitely have respect for what ZRF did in creating that whole scene and culture in the Toronto community. They are definitely on the top of my list. The Hype Multimedia (now Hype1) team gets my respect too. You helped Kleen Media by steering us in the right direction with a lot of our production such as our website. When Mark and I lived in New York, we would log on the old Hype Multimedia website to see what was hot and going on in the Toronto scene, and it is funny because when we finally came to Toronto, we felt like we already knew everyone.

Hype1: Is there anything you don’t like in the current scene?

Mark: I find that compared to the scene in New York, people need to broaden their horizons. The general public is usually not open or very slow to changes and new ideas in the nightlife scene. It’s almost like they prefer to conform to the old stuff and we like to constantly innovate. The club owners and managers are usually open to creative ideas but at the end of the day you need to pack up a club so sometimes you need to ?sell out? on your concept and music for the night. But With all the international events like the Film Festival and Fashion Week, we are getting more and more high profile events so when celebrities come to Toronto they usually attend our parties. Overall there is a general upward movement for Toronto’s club and event scene, which we are proud to be part of.

Hype1: What parties do you have planned in the near future? Should we expect any moves?

Sergio: We have a whole new line up this fall/winter season! We just left Club V in Yorkville and we are starting at State Theater, the venue in which we originated when we moved from New York to Toronto. We are also departing Century Room on Fridays to start a new night at Ultra Supper Club. Both of these nights are going to be sick!!!
Mark: Yes we will be starting Ultra Super Club on Friday, October 20th and we will be doing monthly fashion events there. The night is called "Paris Is Burning" with DJ. Chris LaRoche. Our Saturdays at State Theatre are called "Debauchery" and if you look in the dictionary the definition reads: A wild gathering of excessive drinking and promiscuity. This is exactly what are clients can expect!
Sergio: You can also expect a New Years event that will change the Toronto game!
Hype1: any tips on that?
Mark: Not yet. Just expect a lot of beautiful girls!

Hype1: When exactly is Kleen Media’s one year anniversary?

Mark: Kleen Media’s one Year anniversary party is on Saturday October 14th 2006 and it will be held at the exact same place that we started it all here in Toronto STATE THEATRE!! So come out this Saturday for a night of Debauchery at State Theatre and see what we are all about!
