Grass Review

Who says all the "cool" places have to be on King Street West?

If anything, Rockwood (and the patio entitled Grass Terrace) prove that, while rare, it is possible to have a cool and happening nightspot outside of the immensely popular King Street West area.

Situated on Mercer Street, and formerly the legendary Bauhaus nightclub, Rockwood has emerged as one of the trendiest clubs in the city of Toronto. With a clientele on any given night that is a mix of fashionable, trendy, mature and sophisticated, this venue is an excellent option for your nightlife needs.

Rockwood is owned by Tommy King and the club's name is a combination of the design themes of the first and second floors. The club is moderately sized, but looks way better than its previous incarnation. The patio, Grass Terrace has been furnished with live grass, giving the space a very unique feel. Grass definitely is one of the most original patios seen in Toronto in some time and that is part of the appeal of the space. Rock is the first floor, Wood the second, and Grass the third floor. All of these floors have unique characteristics that make a clubber feel they are partying at three different venues on a single night.

Rockwood has four exceptional nights that are well attended and talked about. "Martini Mondays", once the staple of Bauhaus, continue every Monday night hosted by various industry staff, and Kleenmedia. This night caters to the nightclub industry and is a great party. "Fresh Cut" Thursdays, is a relatively new night that caters to an older clientele including corporate business suit types. "The Ritual" Fridays and "I Love Saturdays" weekly parties are known for reaching capacity at a very early stage in the night so it is strongly suggested that any possible attendees arrive no later than 11:30pm in order to ensure entry to the club.

The music played at the venue is a good mix featuring House, commercial hip hop and RnB, Rock, and top 40. The djs that play at the venue know how to read the crowd and to play to them; they know how to get the dance floor moving. This coupled with their programming, track selection, and seamless transitions and mixes has allowed Tommy King to attract a crowd that respects the venue and appreciates the music.

Alcohol wise, VIP booths are strongly encouraged. The VIP hostesses are polite and extremely professional, and know how to make the high rollers and VIPs and at ease. Drinks are premium priced, (in line with many of the clubs on King Street West) so keep that in mind if you attend Rockwood or Grass. The bottle service menu is extensive and fairly well priced considering the upscale nature of the establishment. Grass features 7 VIP Tables, Wood features 6, and Rock has 5 tables; Customer Service is indeed a premium at this venue and a customer will receive nothing but the best in service.

Style code is a must if you are planning on attending any night at this beautiful venue. Guest list is also strongly encouraged. Rockwood/Grass has the same type of feel as King Street West but without the headaches of parking and the "cooler than thou attitude" sometimes expressed by King Street West regulars. Partying with a mature and stylish crowd that is not on King Street West is very rare in this day and age. Kudos to Rockwood for pulling off this feat.
