If there’s one thing about Toronto nightclubbing it’s this; never judge a party by the size of the venue. Nowhere is this point more evident than at Hotel Boutique Lounge on Peter Street.
Hotel Boutique Lounge has frequently changed ownership over the years (Jesse Carere of the INK-00 superstar conglomerate was a former owner), but the venue has survived and adapted to the current ownership. In this instance, the Cattala brothers (Krystian, Steve and Junior) have catered to a very specific (and desired) clientele that is loyal to the establishment.
The Cattala’s have experience in various service industries (they are opening up a sandwich shop in the heart of the club district, and had success in the banquet hall business) and that experience is evident at Hotel Boutique Lounge. The brothers took over the venue when it was at its low point(an ownership change in summer during patio season will do that), and some in the industry wrote the club off as dead, but the hardworking and charming brothers really turned the space around, and made it one of the most popular destinations in the club district.
The problem most club owners have is they buy a venue, and they expect the promoter to fill the spot and that is it. Club promotions are only one part of making a venue busy. In most cases, the promoter is used to add to an already existing base of clientele. That existing clientele usually consists of the close friends of a club owner. Krystian Cattala in particular has made many friends over the years as a frequent party goer, and now his charm and personality are carrying over in the club business, as he regularly has his friends come out nightly to his different events.
Hotel has a capacity of around 300 people, but the energy in the club rivals some of the larger venues. The club is very intimate and cozy, with a bar to your left as you enter, and another bar to the right. There is a bottle section area on the stage for those inclined to show off that they are “ballin’”. For those that want to be discrete about how much they spend at the club, there is a private VIP bottle service area in the back of the club. You’ll have to pass a bouncer by the back stairs, and a bouncer by the VIP entrance to enter though, so this is for true VIPs.
Staff/crowd/nights
The staff are experienced bartenders and bouncers, with the ability to treat the customers properly. The doormen are polite and fair, especially when the crowd is growing at the door. The bartenders are fast and efficient, and can make your drinks rather quickly.
The crowd is very diverse, and a very good looking crowd. The night is a mix of regulars (ie people that go on Thursday, Friday, Saturday), promoter groupies and a walk up crowd. The crowd ranges from 19-30, with a younger, but well dressed crowd on Saturdays, a house head crowd on Thursdays and a mix of both on Fridays.
Thursdays are a very music driven night, as house music is on the agenda with in demand residents, Manzone and Strong. Saturdays are a bit more upscale with upcoming promoters Dynamite Events hosting the night. Fridays are a mix of Thursdays and Saturdays with legendary nightclub promoter Adnan and the adnanmedia crew with DJ Dave White.
Tips
- Arrive early. Capacity is small, and the place usually fills up by midnight.
- Dress the part. The crowd at Hotel is very stylish
